VTT Information Technology and Helsinki University of Technology launched SCOMS (Software COnfigurable Multidiscipline Switch) project to develop a switching and routing solution capable of supporting multiple switching disciplines. The projects targeted to develop a switching node to integrate circuit, cell and packet switching into a single fabric.

The project was completed in 2000. Resulting implementation contains a signalling software for ATM, ISDN and PSTN networks. IP is supported with routing capable Ethernet access interfaces and MPLS backbone technology. Interworking between different networking technologies is enabled widely with the solution.
